Putting songs on the internet..

I've been working with this band for a while now and it was suggested to create a facebook page. I don't spend any time on the social network sites. I used to myspace, but that was a while ago.

To the point: They have decided to upload one of our "for our ears only" songs up and have tagged it with the (rough draft) barrier to deflect any negativity. Other than not being too fond of the recording, I don't really care.

It seems like nowadays anyone with a recording device can (and will) put their songs up for the world to hear. Whether they be decent or not. Are there any of you that decide not to do this?

What are some pros/cons?

some people really enjoy the DIY/lo-fi approach to things (just look at Wavves' first two releases). In some cases it's considered more honest and it kinda paints this rosy image of how beautiful music can come from anywhere, which is slightly true. Recording quality can only shine a turd, while a great song will be a great song regardless of whether or not the quality is top-notch.

I myself do not use FB that much. Our band does have a page setup though. I am against rough recordings on there. I could possibly see a gig track on there. You know maybe saying " great gig last night at wherever."

We do get a lot of posts asking why no music/ links are posted. I think some expect that you will if you have an actual band page.

It can be a good thing or a bad thing. It really depends on a lot of factors.

I wouldn't put any recording online - but I think it's pretty important to put something up eventually. If you put a crappy-sounding recording it'll make your band appear crap in general, even if the playing itself is okay. It makes you appear really amateurish.
