I used to use a stand to point my speaker up but now I have BBC cabinet which is downfiring and spreads the sound on the stage really well.

Putting your amp at a useful height

Just move 2 or 3 meters away from the amp (if the stage allows you to do).
If you play "bass" notes their waveforms are so huge you'll hear them, we are playing an instrument with a huge sound dispersion.
Also, if you move away from the often seen "amp on the back of your knees" scenario you can even get closer to the audience, and maybe somebody on that place pays attention to the bass player.

Typically, depth of stage is under 4m. 3m is sometimes geneous. 3m might put me in the audience!
