Quarter Pounder with Cheese

While Five Guys is arguably better, it also costs a lot more. At least here, it's about $13 for a little cheeseburger, small fries, and a drink. "Little" being Five Guys nomenclature. I think it's still 3.3 oz. And a small fries is actually enough for two people.

I agree with this assessment. I don't mind paying more because it is that much better. But they give way too many fries. I would never even eat there unless it was lunchtime on a day off, where I would be out and about more to help work it off.

I find the people inside--behind the counter--are the real issue.

A few weeks ago I was rushed and felt it was the best way to accomplish dinner on-the-fly so I stopped by a relatively new and large McD's. Three days earlier they had started a huge, national campaign (TV, print, WEB) for several of their sandwiches...buy one at the regular price and get the second for a dollar. So I went in. Not a soul at the counter. I waited. A gal eventually wandered out (because they always prioritize the drive-through**). I mentioned the deal. She looked at me like I had two heads. She said "I have to check with my manager." I waited. As I did their ginormous menu that is actually 5 large TVs was displaying their menu and short video promos. While I waited, the promo video for my deal played on the menu TWO times.

The Manager came out. I mentioned the deal. She clearly had no awareness and said "I have to ask." I said I had just seen the promo play twice on their menu. She disappeared. A number of people were by now lined up behind me. No sales staff. I waited. (If she was the Manager, who was she going to ask?)

I gave up and walked out.

**I find the "drive-throughification" of America is a huge problem. As others have pointed out, it seems to always go pear shaped. I try to never do the drive through because I feel it wastes gas. Of course, it you go later at night the drive-through is the only game in town since they close the dining area.

When did we become so lazy that we cannot get out of our cars?

I quit fast food last December. Since then i’ve maybe done it 3~4 times, but only the drive up window. The smell inside any fast food joint these days makes me nauseated. It takes something on the level of food poisoning to make me blow grits but the used grease and filthy wet rag sour smell that seems to be built in to every fast food joint puts me off any desire to eat.

My favorite fast food employee stories are the girl mopping the floor until i walked up to the counter. She pulled the mop bucket up to the register and asked what i wanted, i told her we could start with her washing her hands. She actually said “my hands only touch the wrappers so i don’t need to wash them.” My second was walking into a fast food restroom as an employee was finishing his number 1, then walked out without washing his hands. When i went back out he’s bare handed on the griddle. I grabbed wifey and said let’s go. She had already ordered for us and wanted a refund. I told her to forget it, then told her why. She went with no complaint.

Another thing that bugs me is that, when I order the QP at the drive thru, about 50% of the time they tell me to pull over to the side and wait. Kind of defeats the purpose of drive thru. I know, I know: first world problems.

A new Five Guys is opening soon near my house, so I think my McDonald's days are numbered.

Supposedly they're cooking the large burgers to order.

Ever since I discovered Five Guys, McDonalds has been nothing but a memory. The burgers are so much better and the fries are amazing - closest thing you will get to English chips in America. Trust me, I've been to a load of places to find 'chips' and these are the best you will get. Just ask for vinegar!

Should we bring In-N-Out into this discussion? Hehe. Cheaper and better than McDonald's. Hehe.

And before anyone asks me whether Five Guys or In-N-Out is better... My answer is... They're different burger categories. They are both excellent in different ways.

I used to make these back in '79. The burger was a frozen chunk of something meat like back then. They did taste good though. I eat maybe one a year but it seems to me that everything is smaller and of lower quality now.
The arc of the universe when viewed backward tends to add a slightly rosy tint to everything. While always present, it is not always apparent to the viewer. :D

Had to really adjust my diet after my diabetes diagnosis some time back and fast food in general has been moved from a very regular part of my diet to very limited (as in no other reasonable choice at the time - usually because of a gig or rehearsal). I've found in general that I just don't like a lot of the fast food stuff I used to anymore. I always figured that my taste has just changed, but it could be changes in what the restaurants are doing. I don't remember the last time I ate MCD's burger (usually get nuggets or breakfast sandwich if I have to stop there) so no current opinion on the taste of their burgers.

Fast food places in general have become so annoying anyway - menus have gotten so big and change so frequently, that I can't even find what I like anymore in some cases. And don't get me started on drive throughs or service...getting irritated just typing this...

Any time I see a line, I park and go inside. Easiest way to jump the line. I don't like eating in my car, so I seldom use drive-throughs anyway.

When I'm in an airport or on the rush, my fast lunch is two McD standard burgers and a small Diet Coke. No quarter pounders, no big macs, just their basic burgers. Lunch for about $3.00.

I've done the exact same thing many times. But usually with their cheeseburgers. I didn't even know they sold them without cheese, at least not for a long time.

Haven’t had one in forever because I think McD is the worst of the fast food franchises. I’ll visit Wendy’s, BK, Culver’s, Chick Fil-A, Popeyes, Subway, or just about any other chain before McD. I have to be starving and no other choice in sight. However, my wife swears that McD has the best Dr. Pepper from the fountain, bar none.

I go to McD's maybe once a month and I order a Double Quarter Pounder with absolutely nothing on it...... no cheese, no nothing...... two pieces of meat, two pieces of bread.

9 times out of 10 it comes out with cheese on it.
