I've never heard this described as "hyper" anything before, but what you describe is fairly common. If I'm understanding you correctly, it's sort of like what I think of as a slashchord or upper structure approach. Although technically in your case, you're still playing out of the same parent scale. In jazz, it would also not be uncommon to solo out of G Major (pitchwise, I mean) over a C major chord. This would produce a Lydian sound in C.

I dunno man, if he's around when Im on this stupid thing, Ill have him type out what exactly he meant. Would be much easier and less confusing on my part....cos you'd hear it straight from the horses mouth, instead of word of mouth.

It's no big deal, just a question of terminology. And I wasn't trying to slam your brother or anything...I wrote what I did because I didn't want you to feel like you were missing the boat on something very essential when in reality the questions you were asking were about some pretty esoteric stuff. Compared to the stuff you've been asking about around these parts in the last 6 months or so, the scales you're asking about here will be far less useful on a day to day basis.

But hey, you never know: at least now, if you show up on a gig and someone asks you to lay down a "Byzantine Groove", you'll be right on it.

I didnt think I was missing the boat. Ive never heard of the stuff. But somehow I knew it was all uncommon. Ive got a few books and instructional videos, as well as a few friends who are "theory literate" and like to think that If it was common that Id have heard of it somewhere in my 16 years as a bassist.

No worries on me thinkin you were tryin to slam my brother. HEHEHE thats my job, if I thought you were, Id have said something. So no worries, Its all good.

I seriously doubt if someone asked me to lay down a Byzantine Groove, that Id be able to do it...I havent practiced actually at all for it to sink in.
