Consider a chord, arpeggio (Arp) notes, where all the notes are played together, if you arpeggiate a chord you play the notes separately..in any order...in any direction up or down.
So the notes of Cmaj are the exact same notes as a CMaj (Arp).

Its a technique rather than a stand alone theory....every chord you learn can be played Arp'd.

So consider this, most bass lines are Arps in some form because we play single notes in any order...in any direction up or down, unless we play chords.

So listen again to songs and hear the chords being played on the bass as Arps...start simple...Johnny B Goode is a classic example...as are may rock n roll songs with walking basslines.

Root and Tonic are not the same thing.

OK if you must root is I and tonic can be either the I or the VIII.

Actually they are two entirely different things. One is a note in a key, the other is a note in a chord. Is the 5th of the 'IV' chord root or tonic?
