Question about bridge location

I just got the book by Melvyn Hisock, and I was going through it. He states for example that for a 35" scale length, I will have a distance from the 24th fret to the bridge of 8.750". I am a little confused on this, because of compensation. He states that compensation is well with in the limit of the bridge adjustment. So where do I put the bridge? Is the remainder the distance to the saddles in the middle position, so I have adjustment both ways?

You never really need to shorten the string for intonation, only lengthen. So it's best to set the saddles most of the way towards the nut when making your measurement.

^Yep. And the highest string (G, C, etc) will be the furthest forward. I like to give myself ~1/8" on the highest string and place the bridge.

Yes, measure from the fret to the witness point (where the string touches the saddle) with the saddles moved to at least 90% of their most extended position towards the nut.

I put my bridge to where the saddle could have equal movement back and forth, no dice...ended up moving it back a bit as the saddles for the E and A string were almost all the way back for proper intonation.

On a "normal" 4 string I also follow that 90% rule, I have never have to move the saddle forward when intonating from the equal distance position.

For a 6er I'd probably reduce that percentage a bit, down to 70% or 80%.

Why?

Because there's tons of options for a 6er to be strung, and I wouldn't want to be limited with just going lower .

Unless you live someplace where the laws of physics don't apply you will never have to adjust the string shorter.

For a 6er I would definitely stick with the 90% since you B string will need even more compensation.
