Question about chords

Is it possible to chord without bending the wrist? When I do, even after adjusting the strap angle I bend my wrist something fierce. I really don't want to overly strain my wrist, but it can't seem to figure out how to chord without bending it.

Ok here we are.
1: this is what I think is clearly incorrect, however it's the only way I can play an advanced chord
2: this I believe is the right position to play chords in, but I can only span my fingers across one of two different frets this way

I'm not sure here, I can only play a good chord when my wrist is bent like figure 1. Even after adjusting the strap

I never saw someone who play a 6, not having the hand a little bend... and ... chord in first 5 frets is worst idea ever. It sound muddy at best and it will strain your hand very fast.
Huh, do you think it's bent much?(this is a 4 btw but you've seen my gushing about 6 strings on here before :smug: ) and it doesn't strain my wrist out to bad to chord in the first 5 frets, I'm worried about the long run. and it doesn't sound muddy, on that i disagree :spit:

Ok we have different taste but still, it isn't the best place to do a chord since the fret are so far away. Holding down the root and the 10th is easy enough but after that I wouldn't dare to, high on the neck no problem.

what are the notes you're actually trying to play ?

It's not a specific chord, it's when I use them I bend my wrist to get my fingers on d and g string. At any fret anywhere on the neck. And yea it's definitely easier high up on the neck, but with the lead bass style I play I'm always trying to fill up more of the "sonic space" if you will, as I can. I do alot of strumming and other chord heavy techniques, like whatever you call it when you pop a chord.(probably just popping a chord) so I need to heavily use chords all over the neck.

It would help if you could actually fret an "advanced chord" in the pics but based on the generic chord, keep your wrist behind the neck and try to keep some space between your elbow and your body. Get up on the tips of those fingers. You should be able fit a finger between your fretting fingers and the neck, the fingers should not be flat on the fretboard. This will improve your overall playing, not just your chords.

Truthfully, the best advice I can give you is to take a lesson from a good teacher who can get hands on with your technique. It will be worth your money and time.

As far as chords go, they will sound better up the neck to my ears but you are the one making your music, not me. I rock the 6 all the time, chords work good on the low register on the high strings but they get more muddy in the low E range.

Right on, I figured an advanced chord would be less helpful so sorry about that, I'll post again tomorrow with a more advanced one, higher up on the neck. I just bend my wrist when chording,'in general I don't. But with as often as I chord I need to get it perfect and I think this is a hindrance. And the 6, sweet. I can gush about that all day. I really need to get chords down before I get mine though, it's essential in my opinion to use chords on the six, and I heavily use them anyway.

you're a bass player, leave chords to guitards, it's bad enough we keep time for drumtards, let's not do the guitards job too!
Do not even get me started on how stupid that is. If you never chord that's fine, I on the other hand am into advanced techniques. Including heavy use of chording, you can play how you like and so can I. I'm not going to tell you how to play, don't tell me.

Maybe take the strap off, put your left hand on the notes for the chord and use your right hand to move the bass around to see if you can find another position.
Alternatively, you could try transferring the notes to some other point on the fretboard which is easier to reach.
Alternatively alternatively, just use power chords. ;)

Ok I will try this tomorrow. I have to say though, power chords, do you think I'm in 5th grade!!

(I'm kidding, just no power chords for me )

I do power chords from time to time, and 10ths occasionally, not personally feeling any kinks in the wrist, probably because I wear my bass a bit higher. I've tried playing lower, as I see many do, but that did kink my wrist more.
