He uses a Tech 21 RPM which is more expensive and has more options. He also uses a bunch of other stuff that makes his bass sound the way it does. He doesn't use traditional amps anymore.

Try an MXR micro amp. They're about $80 new and I got one for $50 on CL. Really handy gadget for passive basses. I use mine because I have a preamp-power amp setup and the sensitivity on the power amp is really low. The Micro Amp boosts the signal without noise or cutting out bass.

I would also recommend a Behringer BDI21. Many use it to get a tube type sound but I used it for years to boost the signal from my 1978 Jazz. Really made the sound more full and more brilliant. It's also only $30.00.

Start with a god set up. I had a Geddy Lee that cranked out as much as any bass. That was a the best passive jazz I've had. I liked it better than a USA jazz.
