Will updating firmware with the latest version keep me up to tabs on past updates? Are firmware updates cumulative? Or does it really depend on the company issuing the updates?

What device is in question?
Unless otherwise noted yes... firmware is usually cumulative as it replaces everything. It's not like a patch.

Well, it depends - i work in a printers/faxes/copiers service, and some of these devices need to have their firmware upgraded. So for some we upgrade all the firmware, and for some we just upgrade language chip.
