question about my p/j bass

i own a unknown p/j bass (p pickups in neck and jazz in bridge)

i tried to install new pickups but the jazz was to large to fit.

i have the old one in there for looks, but will it work as just a p? i assume it would but would there be an volume loss?

i know nothing about electronics but i'll bet you someone comes and tells you to disable the neck pup or pot so that it doesn't lose volume or some blabbidyblabbidyblah

id need to disable the bridge pup and pot. the p pup is what i want to keep but thanks, never thought of disabling the pot, i hope my wiring goes fine and both will work

i don't understand well what you want:

- only use the P on the bass ?
- use the new P with the old J ?

In both case, better is to try. You can find classic wiring that will work for anycase on Seymour Duncan website

i can easily make the new p and old j work, but i was wondering if its possible to just make only the new p work, so its just a p bass

Just ripp off jazz pickups and re do the wiring as above diagram. You will then have one useless pot but who cares ?

You can also install 3 way toggle for pup selection: neck only, bridge only. both.
Measure the jazz pup length and width. Theyre are probably a few good replacement jazz pups that will fit. Is the problem with the replacement pup you got too long or too wide or both?

its just too long, width is fine.

managed to get the old jazz pup installed, so now its enmg select p and oem jazz. both work and my bass is restrung, now to break in the strings and test the pup.
