Question about reproducing EQ settings

I've recently purchased an amplifier after playing through an interface and Logic for years. I used to play with the "Jazz Bass" EQ preset in Logic:

How would I go about reproducing these EQ settings on my amplifier? It's a Milkman - Volume, Treble, Middle and Bass.

I once asked the builder to tell me more about the amplifier and EQ. He said flat would be all knobs at 10 ("the EQ is subtractive") and that "it's basically just a Fender preamp into the Class D supply."

Thanks!

I highly doubt that it’s possible. The graph shows there are three parametric filters employed, as well as a high pass filter.. So, you’d have to have three parametric filters on your amp, plus the HPF.

And that’s assuming the amp has ruler-flat frequency response to begin with. Some amps deliberately utilize non-flat response to get a specific tone the designer wants.

Of course, then there is the issue of the speaker cabinet...

Would something like Empress's ParaEQ MKII Deluxe help?

A step in the right direction, but exact frequency, gain and bandwidth settings will be extremely difficult to precisely dial in with an analog device, compared to something digital where you can just input in the same parameters the graph shows.

I’m with @Stylee Mousse – try playing with what you have until you get a sound you like. Who knows, you might even like it better than the plug-in.

Thanks!

In order too reproduce the tone contour you need fully parametric EQ. Parametric EQ allows you to dial in center frequency, bandwidth, the level of boost or cut.

Without parametric you would need to find an amp that has a tone stack that perfectly matches the center frequency, bandwidth, and level of cut or boost.

Many amps have a tone stack that is based on the the Fender tone stack. However by changing the component values, they don't necessarily sound or respond like a Fender tone stack.

Here is a model of a Fender tone stack: TSC in the web (guitarscience.net)

The component values match what Fender used in one of their circuits. Nominal flat can be achieved different ways.

Try Treble off, Bass at 0.2, and Mids at 8.0

Also try Treble at 0.3, Bass at 0.2, and mids at 1.7

If the Milkman tone stack is close to this model, you can experiment to see how close you can get to the desired curve (IMHO not very close). I suggest dialing in nominal flat. Then a pair of Empress Mk2 ParaEQ Deluxes should be able to help you get relatively close.

If the amp has a Fender tone stack then all knobs at 10 will be very scooped. Maybe it’s Fender-like. I would just start at flat and make very small adjustments until you are hearing that sound you were after.
For me EQing an amp, the gain and volume make a difference in my perception of the EQ. At one gain level I may like the mids further up but not as much at another gain level.

As a starting point, set bass and treble at 5 for the low and high frequency bumps you see on that Logic screen. Keep the midrange at 0 to get the dip in the low mids. Adjust to taste. Forget about the HPF you see on the screen, your amp's EQ can't do that.

"Flat" on a Fender tone stack is Bass at 0, Mids at 10 and Treble at 0.

There are plenty of other options to generate a sweep or noise, while you capture the output of the head and display it in a DAW while you adjust the head EQ to match.

Here'a a couple of easy ways that might work for you.
Wave's Q-clone

You'd use the Q-capture to sweep your amp and measure the results as you adjust the heads EQ to match what you have in Logic.

Or you can use DDMF Plugindoctor

Both these have signal generators, and can measure the hardware and retain a resulting measurement on the screen.
