Question about Tim Commerford's basses/thumb rest

(sorry if this is the wrong section, or has been asked to death, I searched TB and Google, and couldnt come up with anything.)

I noticed he's got a black piece on his basses, above the pickups, that he uses as a thumb anchor, does anyone have any info related to that? I'm wanting to put something like that on my Jazz bass, I'm curious if he rigged it himself, or if there's any actual device you can buy and install. I'm aware of those plastic thumb rests, but I don't think thats what he's using, and I'd like to avoid any permanent type mods (ie, drilling holes), at least for a while until I knew if it was something I wanted permanently or not

thanks in advance

I believe that tim commerford does most of the changes to his equipment himself, he mentions in an article read that he loves to tweak things. Therefore, I would not be surprised if they were homemade thumb rests

FWIW, I saw two of the most recent basses Lakland's made for him (a batch of four, total) at the shop before they sent them off to him. They each had that rest installed already.
