Question for you Short Scale experts

Well UnB if you're willing to give MusiciansFiend a try, this little Gretsch is in your price range and might suit you

A Guitar Center could get one in for you.

Narrower neck than the Bronco but not as narrow as the Hofner. Very aggressive tone, not Fender and definately not Hofnter. And the tone control has a pretty remarkable range.
It has some neck dive and doesn't weigh much less than a full scale. Made in China. Agathis body. The stock strings are OK but swapping in some better rounds will improve it.

+1 ... I checked out 2 of these in a Glasgow store and they were ply bodied. The sales guy reckoned that this coincided with a fairly steep price drop earlier in the year (so 2006/7 EBOs and earlier are probably solid wood). Interestingly, Epiphone were (are?) still claiming them as solid.

The thing played great, was very light and sounded good - but I had been planning on routing for a bridge pup (giving me an EB3 on the cheap), and with ply that would be way too much trouble.

From looking inside the control cavity, it does indeed appear to be ply... so someone tell an ignorant soul: Why is it "too much trouble?

I have always loved short scale because of the noodle factor... but a lot of them have a kind of 'weak' tone. And also feel like a cheap toy... The only one Ive heard that sounds like a long scale... a little out of your price range but worth it - Dearmond Starfire. I think someone is selling one on TB right now too. Super fast neck, comfortable with small hands... They are also nice and light and great for throwing around on stage! I've poked mine into a ceiling once or twice.. :o

It's semi hollow so you may not like the look, but no feedback problems. The build quality is phenomenal.

I'll look into all those mentioned. I'm also looking at 2 different Rondo SX basses. I suppose an acoustic/electric might be an option pr even a Danelectro too since my main concern is weight (I assume they're light) . Are any of the a/e or Danos in my price range any good?

The Mikro is definitly a front-runner. How is the string spacing compared to like a p bass? I hope the music store that's closest to me gets one in soon so I can try one out.

Just got a SX short scale model SPB-57 3/4 LPB. Plays and sounds great. I replaced the strings and did a complete setup

I also have MIA Fender Jazz and did some neck measurements comparisons. The neck measurement around the fretboard is the same at the 1st and 12th frets. I noticed the similarities when playing it.

I guess if you've got a workshop with routers and the likes, it wouldn't pose a problem, but given that plywood is constructed for strength from several layers of wood with the grains going in various directions, any traditional hammer'n'chisel woodwork would be made very awkward to say the least. Too awkward for me at any rate!:D

Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro- I haven't played one yet but should next week. Kind of curious what the little scale is like and it sure should be light.

SX SJMB-62 3/4 CAR - heard good reviews and Kurt told me they average 7 1/2 pounds.

I did get to try an EB-o and I just didn't care for it. Can't really explain why. Just didn't mesh with it.

I'm also looking at a couple Danelectros. By the way, my wife says the next bass must be red.

Well, I got's more tools than sense, so I am gonna hack it up and see what happens...

oh- you're quite welcome! My SO says the strings spacing 'feels' a bit narrower, but you would need a micrometer to see. It only took him a few minutes to play it as well as his 34" Fender- it still amazes him that it sounds so good! All of these look really great- and order a Mikro in for yourself so it doesn't sell out again before you get there- or do you have to pay for it up front? I know the GC here was great about that for me- if I didn't like it, they knew they could sell it quickly. BTW- mine is the exact color of the pic you posted! :-)

Cool, Thanks for the info. I have a feeling that's what I'll end up with. I should be hearing something this week on when new ones are coming in. I know I can always get them on-line but I'd rather pay the little guys.
