Question on SPEAKER RE-CONES

Hi here's my questions regarding re-cone jobs/kits etc.....

I've an old EV 1x15 cab with a Mesa Black Shadow marked EV 400w 8 ohm 15" spkr in it. I bought the cab separately to the Spkr, altho I was told by -hopefully- someone who knows, that the match was good. It seemed to be as it's been a great working cab for nearly 15 yrs.
A couple of months ago I was working on the cab & ....accident.. ended up with a screwdriver going through the cone!!:crying:
I repaired this as I'd been shown from my Dad, with an old pair of stockings glued onto each side if the tear & it's been going fine since.
BUT.....;) I'm thinking of selling the cab 'one day' & would like to sell it with a proper cone in place. So was wondering the following....
About recone jobs/kits:-
1. The speaker repairer/expert in my town mentioned that Eminence recone kits are relatively inexpensive, & that EV recone kits are relatively EXPENSIVE!!!:(
2. What part/s of the speaker/driver are replaced/included with a 'recone'??
Is it all the 'paper' parts, foam surround, dust cap ???
3. Does one HAVE to redo an EV speaker with an EV 'recone kit' or can you simply use another 15" speaker recone kit? If you CAN use ANY-or ANOTHER type that suits- to recone, would their be a differece in sound???
4. What do reckon I should do???:smug: Loaded question I know, but I'd sure appreciate your 'view' here.

Any info would be a help! Thanks guys!

Reconing replaces all of the moving parts...surround, cone, dust cap, voice coil and spider.

How bad does it look? (can you post a photo?)

I suppose if a non-OEM kit is used, it would work as long as the voice coil is in the right place, etc. How well it would work remains to be heard.

If you don't have a lot of money in the speaker and the cabinet, just sell it as is. You can demonstrate that it works just fine, tell the potential buyer how long it's been working well since the repair, etc.

Yes, you need an E-V recone.

One of the drivers in my Trace Elliot 1248H had a radial tear in the cone when I received it. I patched it with a layer of 3M/Scotch woven fiberglass packaging tape on both sides of the cone. It's been holding fine for several years, and sounds perfect.

My Trace Elliot 1153 had a circumferential tear in the surround. I patched it with a layer of black cotton cloth on each side saturated with black silicone sealant. It's also been working fine for several years and sounds perfect.

E-V has been in business for a long time, and will be in business for a long time. If/when you sell the cab, be honest with the purchaser. E-V will still have recone kits available if they want to replace the driver.

I WOULD be honest with buyer in ANY case. I would NOT sell the cab as having an EV speaker-if it had a recone using another type!!!!! NO WAY!!! I'd simply state what I'd done!
So yes an EV recone would be best, but NEED??? Thats MY call !
If I did get the EV recone OR the NON-EV- I'd simply state what was done. Thing is.... In MY area.. an EV TL 1x15" cab will probly sell for around $200-$300,
With a new EV recone-$200-300,
with a non-EV recone(if possible- I dunno if it IS even yet!!!!) $200-$300
With a repaired Spkr- $100-$150
If & when I do sell the cab, The buyer will probly be a young guy wanting a working bass cab...& wouldn't mind whether it's an EV or another sort-as long as it worked well etc...
So I'll probly get a EV recone, but I wanna know my options- tis all.
Can I buy a NON-EV recone to fit it????

You will need an E-V recone, because E-V manufactured the driver, and only E-V will make a recone to fit your driver. Every driver is different. They are not generic commodities.

BTW, you can remove the driver and send it to E-V for reconing. I've had drivers repaired by E-V directly, and through authorized E-V repair centers.

Which reminds me, I need to order a new sleeve for my N/D 767 mic...

Absolutely. There are a number of aftermarket replacements from companies like Waldom that will work just fine and cost far less than an E-V kit -- like maybe half as much. But it's a bit of a crapshoot as to just how close to the original specs the resulting driver will be. Depends a lot on the skill of the reconer, IME.

You'll also find that a few Talkbassers have replaced the E-V drivers in those cabs with Eminence Kappalite 3015s (mostly the non-LF version, since that one works better in that size box and also as a standalone driver for bass applications).

As someone who's heard and used many E-V drivers in TL cabs, I'd personally go with a neo replacement in a heartbeat. The weight savings is quite profound. I have a 3015LF in my DIY TL606 clone (with a midrange driver and tweeter on top), and to me it sounds even better than it did when loaded with EVM15B, 15L, or SP-15. I never had the 400 watt models in there though, only the 200 watters.

Ahhh, OK thanks for that! Well since I live in Hobart & I don't wanna send it to USA, There's probly dealers in Sydney/Melbourne & I may look into that. The 'Speaker guy' in my town CAN do them apparently... he was the one who told me he "CAN get EV recone kits, but they're expensive", unlike the one's needed for my Eminence Spkrs!

So- all moving parts- cone,surround, dustcap, voice coil, spider....(any others???) get replaced?? Must ask Alf (spkr guy) how much one is + labor???

It ran about $150US with EV parts the last time I checked locally, which was a few years ago. Looks like Speakerrepair.com currently charges $99, presumably with aftermarket parts. They or someone else could probably ship a recone kit to your man in Oz -- dunno if that would be cost effective or not though.

Good luck. I hate and fear screwdriver mishaps so much that I generally try to use Allen head bolts and screws in my cabs whenever possible these days.;)

I was being SO careful too!! :bawl: knowing MY luck an ALLEN key would've gone thru it also!!! :spit:
ah well. Can't cry over spilled milk... But torn EV spkrs :bawl:
