Question: Why is this bass worth $24,000?

Mike & Mike's always asks way above top prices, no suprise there.

I once ran into them at a show. I had an all original custom color 65 Jazz with me, and he only offered half of what I'd be willing to even take for it, then proceeded to ask if I'd be interested in buying their refin 66 Jazz at a price higher than he offered me a minute earlier for my original 65 Jazz. :rollno:

That said; yeah, with no connection to anybody - and no provenance to prove it? The asking price is more than a little unrealistic. It is finished in a custom color (for the time), so depending on how rare that finish is for 1963 - on a P-Bass - it might add to the price. How much? I have no idea... Fortunately for me, that tort pickguard, the neck contour those basses had, and the fact that it's wrong-handed for me, make it a no-go - even though I could afford the asking price - if I was foolish enough to pay it. But, the fact that I have a really nice "A-spec" necked lefty '78 P-Bass - and have no need of another P-Bass - makes it a definite no-go....:cool:

Pre CBS instruments command the highest prices for Fenders. It’s a custom color, has the original case and it looks to be in really good shape for a 59 year old bass. Very few instruments from this period survive without being beat up or altered, refinished or modified in some way etc. That said, $24k is very high.

It could be a great bass. I have a 63’ Precision and it amazing. But I’ve had it for 40 years so I didn’t have to pay this kind of money for it.

But all you need is that 1 person who is willing, and bam. 24k bass. It is worth whatever someone will pay for it.

I understand how market forces work. But I am yet to see why, as a playing instrument, they are worth that much coin. If you're rich or a collector, or nostalgic for one because you couldn't afford it when you were young, and can now, awesome and I hope it brings you much joy.
So I think that covers the OPs question.

I doubt that will be bought as a player.

This is not your typical vintage instrument - very early, rare custom color, original rare case, original condition (no mods), excellent condition.

If someone had a model T that was all original, including paint, and had been garaged for the last century, the asking price would be similarly exorbitant. And no one would buy it to drive regularly.

Of course the one he was selling was more than he offered for yours.

Thats how it works. Because, you know, business and all. Do you really think they make no money?
