Questions About Geddy Lee's Rickenbacker

If you do some searching, the tracks pulled from the Rock Band game are available to you can hear Geddy's solo bass from the entire MP album as well as Closer to the Heart and Working Man. Here's a link to a short clip of Limelight, guitar, drums and vocals were brought in and out at various points just to show how it fits in the mix...doesn't do much good since it ended up mono



I've always loved the sound on that one, very thick!

Since the Rick is what the original poster was talking about , I guess an example of that might be better than his Jazz. This is from Closer to the Heart. Again a beautiful thick sound. I wasn't as impressed with the soloed Rick from Red Barchetta although I always loved that sound in the final mix.

I love both of those sounds, but I think I like the Ric sound better (from the Closer to the Heart clip).

A major reason I'm asking this is because I've considered purchasing a Ric instead of a Fender Jazz, but I'm curious why someone like Geddy Lee would pick a Fender Jazz over it, especially after using the Ric exclusively for many years.

Why did Geddy choose the Wal over the Rick? Why did Geddy use the Stienberger? Why do I like Carrots more than Brussel sprouts?

As much as I love a Rickenbacker, and GAS for one (hell I'd marry one if I thought it was legal) I also love the different sound of the Jazz.

And apparently so does Geddy. I may be chased by a hoard bearing torches and pitchforks, for saying this - a Rickenbacker is just a bass with a sound all it's own. And either you like it or you don't. And apparently Geddy liked what he heard and felt when he picked up that pawn shop special we all see yet today...

That question didn't really come out how I wanted it, but you answered it just the same.

Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of his Jazz, but I also love the sound of the Ric. Just curious on his choice, but no harm in preference I suppose!

At some point in my life, I will buy a Ric. Or I will at least try one and if I like it, I will try very hard to buy it.

Hey, it's cool. I got what you were getting at, I just hope I didn't sound like I was being sarcastic....I wasn't...

BTW, if you try a Rick and like it, and have the means...buy it! I tried several, over the years and liked em all, some more than others. However I found one that was "the one" once and didn't buy it. The price was stupid low, it felt like it belonged in my hands, the bass was in great shape and I didn't buy it.....smart, huh?

The sound at the venue of the more recent concert wasn't as good, bu when I saw them the summer before last, and when they started playing A Passage to Bangkok, the difference between the Ric and the Jazz was QUITE clear, the Ric sounded a LOT better, imo. I have nothing against his Jazz sound at all, it sounds amazing, but with the amazing tone he got out of the Ric, I'm surprised he doesn't use it more.

I fully agree. He has his jazz dialed in really well with that Sansamp RPM, but the Rickenbacker just has this distinct growl that really appeals to me.

I, too was heavily influenced by Geddy. I began listening when I was in 8th grade - 1978 or so. I had a Rick 4001 within a couple years. I like his Ric tone, and I think his jazz tone is really nice as well.

I would love to get close to it for my "rock" tone. There are so many things that influence his tone - bass, preamps, fingers, style, etc. The mix of RBI/Avalon U5/Palmer Speaker emulator certainly has something to do with it. All really nice top end gear. Th ebasses are top as well.

I have thought about doing something like this but it is not cheap.

After listening to even crappy youtube videos - I can hear a difference with the Ric - and I like it. Iforgot how linked that was to Geddy for a long time. It's a great sound. Makes me long for my old Ric.

Wanted to make sure people knew these are actual soloed bass tracks, not links to the songs themselves. Some editing was done to bring the other tracks in and out but mostly it's just soloed bass. Lot's of fun to hear the real thing and how he plays.

That is close to my fave Geddy tone too. He has so many tones that I like it is tough to pick one. But his tone on Diffrent Stages is so huge and crunchy. Whenever I listen to 2112 -LOUD-from this album I am floored by the power of Geddy and the band.
