Questions For 212 Users.

Got a few questions for you 212 users.

In years past, (18 to 20 yrs. ago?), I tried several, but not all, 212 cabs that were available at that time.

I owned one for a very short time, (a Ed*n 212XLT.)

My ears found them "all" to have a mid-range honk that I couldn't get dialed out and a feeling of a slow transient response.

I realize alot of advances have been made since then.

I'm looking for input, which manufacturer's modern 212 cabinet doesn't have the exaggerated mid hump and has a fast transient response as my ears say most 10" drivers have?

I have a 2x12 from 440 Live that just sings. I‘ve used it with the Orange amp, an EBS Reidmar 750, and a GK 800RB. All with excellent results. They do come in other colors.

As you mentioned, a lot of technical developments have happened in bass cabs since your last try at 12" cabs.
All of the Bergantino 2x12 cabs work great and do not have any really exaggerated mid humps in my experience ... very even and clear across the spectrum.
The Mesa Subway 2x12's get a lot of praise around here too ... along with Barefaced, and quite a few others.

I don't think you should worry about general poor sound quality from modern 12" cabs ... and of course, the best way to judge is to go try some out with your own gear (and ears).

And the Bergantino AE212 (which is mayyyybe 10 yrs old now) is possibly an opposite of a SLIGHT mid bump. I'm not trying to say it's scooped, but it's quite deep and smooth.
With the newer 212s Jim Bergantino makes, I'm sure they've only got better too. Not that there was anything wrong with the AE.

I have just recently acquired these 212 Subway cabs. They will not disappoint. But I recommend a pair. They seem to feed off each other. When using just one it sounds fine. But two is magic. You will need a 2 ohm capable amp. I’m waiting for a pair of the GK NEO IVs to come in at Sweetwater so I can also have an 8 ohm pair. Don’t ask me why. My evil plans are mine alone.

Mesa 12s are the jam but my experience is only with 2 112 cabs so...

But I also have a Boom Bass Cab 212 that is 100% solid. It’s super punchy and loud and does the deep thing well with 180 degree ports and the highs are as crisp as you want with a 300W horn. It’s compact and lightweight too. Solid mids but not old school mid heavy.

I have that Genz 212t cab as well but I've never heard the cab get honky at all. I'm sure there are better newer cabs out there, the Subway series for instance and the newer GK's. I've never been a big fan of 10's myself, just seem to be missing something, but then I've always had a preference for bigger drivers.

I agree with shadven; listen and compare solo if that is what your ears are used to, but in a band setting, it’s the mid-range that gets you heard.
Other than my little Rumble 40, I’ve been using only 12’s for nearly 20 years now.
