A day/night mirror has two reflective surfaces, a mirror and a piece of glass. The glass is in front of the mirror, and they are set at an angle from each other. When in the "day" position, you're seeing the refection from the mirror, and when in the "night" position, you see the dimmed reflection from the glass.

Yeah, that's why when you study (stare) at a rear-view mirror for a long time, you can see more than one reflection of yourself.
