So I just thought I should publicly express my gratitude about a supplier that went the extra mile.
A few months ago I built a 10 string octaved bass. The bass was somewhat experimental and since even the fact that it was going to be 10 string hadn't been planned I figured I'd go all the way and try some pickups I'd never used before. So I special ordered these extra long J pups from Villex based on reviews I'd read.
So, eventually I complete the bass and I'm very happy with the bass and the sound except for one thing. One of the strings is just dead. I mean less than half the volume of the others. Since its one of the upper octave strings it made that pair sound dull and lifeless.
I tried moving the string slightly to the side to see if it would make a difference but it didn't seem to, and I thought maybe it's a bad string. But anyways I had three other projects in the works and just set this aside and finished up all this other stuff and also got distracted by working on insulating my shop for this winter, etc.
So finally things are calming down and I have some time to get back to this 10 string. I unstring the thing and do some tests and find that there really is a dead area on the pickups. Very mystifying...
I send a quick note to Mr. Villex explaining what I was seeing. Keep in mind this was the only order I'd ever made to him, and I'd had the pickups for like 4 months. His response is "send them back and I'll test them and probably send you a new set right away". So I sent them off.
So, 5 days later I have a new set in hand and working perfectly!
