quick question about amp set up

i have an ampeg 8x10e cab and i have no amp head was thinking of buying the line 6 lowdown hd400 head or do i need somthing better..... the line 6 lowdown hd400 is in my price range but i asked the guy at guitar center and he told me i probably needed somthing better then pointed out a few amps that were way out of my price range like he wanted me to just spend more money waznt giving me an answer any response is helpful thanks

I will not even buy strings at Guitard Center. I hope you are not looking at a price over $400, that’s online. I have played the Line 6 at a gig as the back-up band supplied it. I found it to be nice and adequate. I normally use a Sans Amp and a PA head. I play a lower, bluesy deep sounding bass and it was ok for one night. No comments from the usual crowd, close friends and family will always tell you when something was off. I don't know what style you play, what I do like about the Line 6 is if you don't know your sound yet you have a lot of choices. It is a little on the cheap side, but for $400 it is a good deal. How long did the salesman talk and listen to you to determine you needed to drop more money?

i mostly play hard rock or metal i have an ibanez srx 700 and 8x10 cabinet just no amp head my price range is about 400 to 500 bucks i dont want to spend over that just yet i figure if the line 6 hd400 will work just fine with the ampeg i got ill just go with that since its in my price range but i dont know much about watts and dont want somthing that isnt gonna be loud enough or somthing that will destroy my speakers i have a behringer pa head im using on it now but it doesnt go loud at all not enough to keep up with with our guitarist they use 6505 peavey amp with 4x12 vintage 30 cabs ..... my question really is just would a 400w head be good for a live show if all i have is an 8x10 cab ... thanks !

believe it or not, i think the line 6 amps aren't so bad. their b-15 emulation is pretty good and would sound good in an 810e. they're not the most solidly built amps ever, though, and that kind of turns me off.

$400 goes farther on the used market than the new these days. there are some outrageous deals on really good quality amps because there's so much innovative new stuff coming out and people sell last year's model for the new one.

Typical salesman....the scum of the earth....just get whatever you think sounds good and is loud enough for you. And don't limit yourself to what's available new at guitar center. Quality used equipment is still better than shoddy new equipment.
