Quick Question: Connecting a preamp to an amp head

Do you use the diode mod plug?

Is the plug to emulate tube type distortion?

If the Ashley effects out to the SWR effects receive sound the Best, I'd stop using the diode mod plug.

The SWR has an fx mix knob. I keep that on 10 when running the Ashly into it’s fx receive. That disables the SWR’s preamp, so there’s no stacking.

Preamp on my SWR is semi parametric, so I can use it to tune in preamps that have more basic tone stacks

There some guys that will do the same thing with the old Groove Tubes branded SWR preamp, the Grand Prix, the studio series, etc.

Doesn’t sound like tube type distortion to me. It gets fairly thick and furry.

i was unable to find my old thread where this was explained to me. I simply want to connect my Ashly preamp to my SWR head. It’s my understanding this disables the preamp section of the SWR, using it only to power the Ashly.

The plug that’s inserted in the fx send is the diode distortion mod for this SC-40 preamp.

I enjoy using a preamp into a head
I go out of my Furman into any input on my trusty old Kustom 200.
Goes from sounding weak/anemic to sounding respectably awesome .

So many people have used pedals into heads not realizing those can be used as standalone preamps

It must make the Darkglass and Sansamp guys tear their hair out when people ask them if they can run their pedals thru a poweramp.

I can only imagine how many time Aguilar CS has been called by someone that owns their preamp pedals and wants it to go into one of their heads and they have to explain certain pedals are the base preamp of a given head.

The diode mod is too harsh.
I don't bother using it.

Just crank the gain and the mids around 1.5k. Smoother drive and no bass end loss....
