quick question:Is this ash?

Me too. In the second pic, you can see a fair amount of grain. I don't think I've seen alder look like that.

The trouble is, alder CAN look like that, but doesn't always. It could be mild ash or grainy alder.
I don't think "grainy" is the right word.
It is hard to tell because of the picture size and finish, so let's try it the other way. Here is a really good picture (from another thread) of a natural finished ash bass:

The grain is really vivid on this one and it isn't always taht striking, but ash typically has some pretty strong contrast.

IMHO, it is probably Ash. It looks a lot like the grain on a 44-01 natural I just sold. Better Pics would help. Show us the back?
Can't tell. Every time I get thinking alder is straight grained without pronounced figure, I run into a grainy alder bass. Why not post a close-up so we can really tell?
I'd say yes, but as everyone else said, the pics are small, and Alder can sometimes be tricky with grain patterns.

Until I see a picture of the back I'm going to say it's alder. Fender would have used a more interesting piece of ash for a burst body.
The seller just told me its one of the really heavy fenders... so i assume its ash....

Actually, i am looking for a not-so-heavy Jazz bass.... so lets get focused on the weight
