quiet practice setup

Looking for options to practice with just headphones. I would like to plug into a phone/ipad and play/practice along with drum tracks/music. Can this best be accomplished with an iRig? or a VOX headphone amp?

Yes, I highly recommend the VoxAmplug for Bass, but for playing along with other equipment like phone or iPad- the iRig is the best option.

The Amplug is nice but I’m currently using my audio interface and am streaming songs on YouTube at the same time. I can hear both myself and the songs in my headphones and can mix levels to taste.

I'm old-school. I use a small analog mixing board. Its mic preamps are actually pretty good for bass.

This might work

I use a larger version for mics and iPhone input at our jam for play-a-long or “How does that part go?” purposes.

I hadn’t thought about using the mic preamps to input the bass. Somebody smarter than I can confirm that.

I've been using the irig option for silent practice for a few years and love it. I use an ipad just because I prefer the screen size. I have a pair of Edifier H850 headphones, an irig HD unit, and use a bunch of apps depending on what I'm doing. I use Amplitube and have bought the Ampeg SVT emulations and they are amazing, the app has tuner, drum kit, looper, recording studio, pedals, amps, cabs, mics, and is massively configurable. You can load songs from your itunes library and play along, adjust vol, speed, and loop sections. It's a hoot and is also massively portable. The play along engine only allows you to pick 1 song at a time, so if I'm practicing a 'set' I use the PocketGK app - this allows you to choose a playlist in itunes and have it go from one song to the next without interaction. Oh - most apps will allow you to start the app and then open another app - so I can start amplitube and then open chrome and pay along to youtube vids.. Other noteworthy apps are AmpKit, ToneStack GO, JamUp, and Bias AMP2.

A small mixer works great for this. I got a Soundcraft Notepad 5 for around $100.
