Quilter Bass Block

I have a Quilter and a GK 700RBii. They're totally different animals......

You can't get as much zing/treble out of the Quilter but the Quilter has a natural fatness about the tone thats not so easy to dial in to the GK. And it slots into a band mix really well.

The GK preamp is way more complicated too, probably more versatile but it definitely takes a bit of experimenting with the boost and woofer controls to get the best out of it. The Quilter is the easiest amp i've ever used to set up a good sound very very quickly - you just need to clear your mind a bit, understand what the 2 tone controls actually do (don't be shy of turning them anti clockwise and using the volume to compensate) and play with the gain a bit.

Comparing it with other class D's? I've had TC, Genz, Mark Bass and GK class D's run through the same cabs and all have been gigged extensively. Good amps but they all run out of of booty when you really push them hard. They get louder but all lost their slam as the limiters begin to kick in so they just get shouty in my experience. I believe they all use the same power modules and i think its inherent in that design. The Quilter uses their own design (correct me if i'm wrong) and it has no such issues - its in a different league in terms of keeping the slam and shake going as you turn it up.

And finally, can you get the same heft from it as you can from a non class D amp? Compared with my EBS TD amps and an Ashdown ABM600 that i was using until fairly recently i would say that you can't quite get there. But its bloody close - i would say over 95% of the way there and consequently i'm very happy to use it on big gigs that would normally need my bigger (physically) amps.

They're fabulous little amps.......

I've had both. Can't really be compared. the GK1001 is a monster that makes ears bleed miles away with all the headroom in the whole world and lots of lovely GK grit. I let it go cause it was so damn heavy and big when I really wanted to tote my bass, speakers, and amp in one trip. I'm much happier with the Quilter for these reasons. I had given up on class D until I tried the quilter which has the warmth and girth I'm looking for. Maybe not quite the brutal heft of the GK, but that's alright.

Hi,
Was checking to see if a Tick was able to carry my BB800, and from the dimensions I found it seemed to be just a little bit too small. What's your experience? Isn't it too tight, so the Tick may be damaged from trying to fit the amp?
It would be very convenient if I could buy a Tick for this use! :-)

Just to repost as I'm not sure anyone responded to it - is anyone's BB800 noisy?

The one I have at the moment has started making louder-than-expected fan noises. I definitely think this is new behaviour as I don't remember hearing it before. Enough that I can easily hear it at idle. It doesn't sound like something's stuck in the fan, more like a bearing or fan wearing out. Which is odd...
