Quit a 'band' tonight

2 days before the event the erstwhile BL announces he's booked a 1-hr outdoor gig (this is PA...) for early November. At $40 a person.

So we had The Talk at last night's rehearsal and they said all the usual hobby-band stuff, the essence of which was "we just do this for the fun,

An outdoor gig in November for $40/person is their idea of fun?

I think this was just passive-aggressive (not the first time this trait has appeared...) pushback on "we don't have any gigs booked."
As in - be careful what you ask for - you want a gig? I'll show you a gig...
In truth, early November can be nice, and with enough radiant heaters can be pleasant enough.
And a couple of years ago we had 8" of snow for Halloween, so it's a total cr&pshoot viewed from August.
I think nothing will come from it, but I could be wrong - that's my gamble... I wish them well.

Not to hijack but: I feel for OP and other chiming in. I joined a drummer and guitar player four months ago. We take turns paying $40 rehearsal space fee but I make a good living so that isn't bad, in fact I would likely pay for them all if I was the BL. My issue is that there are always new songs brought up by the BL, so we spent a lot of time on these at a rental space. It would be better if he would email the song and key ahead of time. The other issue is that the songs that he throws out on the spot have lots of chord changes and, in most cases, he still trying to get them right himself. We are nowhere near being ready to play out due to this. Just when I learn five new songs he throws out a few more on the spot.

Although I have nothing else going on, I am starting to get a bit jaded by this. I have never been in such a situation. I have asked for a proposed set list over and over. Plus I will go home to practice/learn these songs and he will call out something else the next time we meet. I was going to tell them I was done last practice but I ended up have a good time despite all of this...we'll see.

i've pretty much forgotten what it's like to "rehearse" covers; you learn them at home, then play them on the gig. if they don't sound right then you didn't do your homework or else you're not good enough. (Ok if you're doing like king crimson covers then yeah you might need some rehearsals, but when will you ever gig with that stuff?)

"band practice" is for original bands where you're all hammering out ideas for songs, that's part of the creative process

That sucks! BL clearly doesn’t know how to run rehearsals. Or doesn’t understand the difference between practice and rehearsal.

The only thing you are wrong about is you can actually get a large Latte with your hope and $5 at Starbuck's.

Brasswind rarely rehearses. Songs are sent via email including link to youtube and charts. Most of them are reading music on gigs anyway (except me).

This is exactly what my last band did, in fact sometimes we would get a request for something that was not on our set list, if one of us knew the song we would play it. Then decide later if we wanted to add it permanently.
If we had a song idea that was wordy or full of changes we would get together on an off day. Other than that we NEVER rehearsed.
