quitting a band

I'm just one of those people who prefers to get along with others and keep life relatively painless....

I just don't like hurting peoples' feelings or feeling like I've made a bad impression.

It's not that I don't want to stand up for myself....

Especially in New York City where the music industry is such a small world, I have to deal with this in a way that won't bite me in the *** later.

I used to be just like you. IME, it doesn't turn out well. :atoz:

There is an alternative to your conclusion about always being the peace maker by "getting along with others to keep life relatively painless" or "hurting other's feelings"

Sometimes when you don't articulate a timely thought, statement or argument, many people assume you are weak,a pushover, less than intelligent or agree with whatever is being said or done. And if you wait until tension rises and things "blow up" to speak up, you look even more foolish.

Articulating a thought can also be done in a way that conveys respect for others and does not "make a bad impression", thus creating respect for yourself from others.

As far as your knowledge about "hurting other's feelings", consider that articulating your thoughts on an issue (taking a stand) in real time may actually further yourself towards your goals.

All this takes practice and it appears that you like to let things slide so you don't have to speak up, thus perpetuating the tension you feel over a situation.

Another thought, how does your philosophy of inaction work in your non-band life?

IME, being able to calmly articulate one's needs, observations, conclusions in a calm manner and the ability to take a stand based on one's knowledge/beliefs are skills that serve me well in all areas of my life.

If you have the ability to carry on an intelligent conversation about your situation, people can always agree to disagree and move on.

All this takes more effort than living life in a "relatively painless" manner but it seems that you'll get more out of it instead just getting what you'll put up with so as to "not hurt other people's feelings".

Good luck.

Stumbo, I'll have to think about everything you said before I jump the gun in responding...although honestly, it's very interesting to me how suddenly this seemingly trivial situation has become a major source of stress in my life...due in part to a personal relationship which I recently left, after months of sticking it out not wanting to hurt anyone. Miraculously, when we mutually agreed to split up, it actually didn't go too badly...but in the meantime, things had escalated to some pretty ugly arguments...arguments which were in part triggered by my inability to be honest about my feelings and my inability to stand up for myself. It was a very controlling and damaging situation. It has also left me really gun-shy when it comes to any sorts of interactions with people in general. I think it's safe to say that I'm definitely projecting other issues in my life, onto this...which of course, is not fair to anybody. I think after next week's rehearsal I am just going to say that I'll do the gig since it's short notice, but that after that point, I will no longer be able to commit to them because I am focusing on other projects...which is not a lie, after all.
