"I've been running around all my life with only two nuts, and I've done just fine". - my dad, circa 1980.
He was driving me and my friends home in his Ford Pinto from the roller rink in the pouring rain, and we got a flat on the way. We all had to get out of the car while he changed the tire. Pintos had 4 lug nuts, and after only putting 2 of them on he said good enough, get in the car lets go. I questioned if only two nuts would be ok, and that was his answer. My friends were cracking up, and my dad suddenly was cool.

When my daughter was signing up for classes for her freshman year in high school she wanted to take Japanese at the district’s special school, mostly reserved for college level classes. She needed our permission for that.
She had already been taking classes there, as part of a select group of middle school students who were expected to take AP classes and the like in high school. It was the first time she had to work at anything in school, and she quickly fell behind. Eventually she finished with something like a C and a D - not good.
I pointed out her lack of effort at homework and told her I didn’t think she was prepared to succeed. She said, “I thought you told me never to let anyone tell me what I can’t do.”
I had, in fact, told her that repeatedly during her childhood. We let her take Japanese and she excelled at it for the next 4 years.
