Quotes by Musicians

And there was a real shedding of the old dogma, like boundaries of morality were being broken down and everybody was into the new party mode of just loving on each other. Which destroyed thousands of us. I lost 16 of my personal friends through that lifestyle.

These go to eleven.

Check page 2 of the thread. I found the entire film dialogue for that quote. It's funny.

I'm always amazed that people take what I say seriously. I don't even take what I am seriously. - David Bowie

“There’s always that argument to make – that you’re in better company historically if people don’t understand what you’re doing.”
- Elliott Smith

I cant find the quote, so please allow me to paraphrase from memory.
Count Basie was being interviewed (in England, I think), and the interviewer asked him to comment about his sparse style of piano playing. Basie replied something like: Well, I guess I just cant play no more piano.

Drummer/band leader, (and Ella Fitzgeralds first husband) is reported to have said on his death bed,
Sorry man. I've gotta go.

A few more that I found while searching in vain for the Basie quote:

Freddie Green on Count Basie: "The Count don't do much, but he does it better than anyone else."

Drummer Jo Jones said:
"You must remember that there were about four drummers in Basie's band. Besides Basie, there was Freddie Green..."

Count Basie - "If you play a tune & a person don't tap their feet, don't play the tune."

Count Basie - "If you find a note tonight that sounds good, play the same damn note every night!"

Miles Davis - "I really liked Wynton when I first met him. He's still a nice young man, only confused."

Miles Davis - "It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play."

Paul Desmond - "I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini."

Paul Desmond - "I have won several prizes as the world's slowest alto player & a special award in 1961 for quietness."

Jimi Hendrix - "Knowledge speaks, wisdom listens."

Jimi Hendrix - "All I play is truth & emotion."

Stan Kenton - "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be."

Roland Kirk - "When I die I want to be cremated, put in a bag of pot & have beautiful people to smoke me."

"Look, just between us, nothing good ever comes from playing guitar. Nothing." - Kennan Shaw (bass player)

"There is nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself." - Johann Sebastian Bach (on playing the organ)

"I would advise you to keep your overhead down, avoid a major drug habit, play every day and take it in front of other people. They need to hear it and you need them to hear it." - James Taylor (giving tips to up-and-coming musicians)

"One has to be half a merchant on top of everything else, and how badly one goes about it." - Ludwig van Beethoven (on being an artist)
