R.I.P. 4004 Series basses

I had one for awhile which i later traded off. The early ones had necks you could park a bus on.

I love those necks. Wide but not deep.

Most of mine are like that, except for my '04 Laredo.
It has a FAT rounded clubby neck. Even so, I really love playing it.

I built my own 4004 type bass from parts that I managed to purchase … bolt on neck, 2 humbuckers, schaller bridge, wired like a 4003/4001

Same width as a P Bass, so I guess the same could be said for those.

It's not just width at the nut, the depth is - at least for me - a big factor. I own several P basses, none of them come close to the gargantuanly fat necks of my Rics (4003 and 4004).
In case anyone is interested... I measured the front to back thickness of a number of my basses. Ranged from 20mm for an Ibanez AEB20 to 24mm for my 4003. Doesn't sound like much, but just a few mm makes a world of difference in feel. American P deluxe came in at 21.5mm, my 4004 was 23mm.

My favorite Rick necks are the shallower ones. My '98 Cheyenne is probably the best in that regard of the 4 4004s i have.
