I was looking at getting a rack mouted EQ for my rack but i was wondering how many people use them and whats the best EQ to get thats less then 500 dollars.

Rack EQs

I've been using 31 band graphic eq's in my rack for over 20 years already. I feel they really help or at least give you a lot more control over your tone. Even set at no boost or cut, it sounds different than when not used. I don't mess with mine every gig. I tend to adjust the head or the active boost/cuts on the bass on the gig to make things work. You know...3 controls on the bass or 5 on the head is "easier" than 31 every gig.
I've used a DOD and a Rane, but frankly, any of 'em are fine and they're around $149 to 199. I added a sonic maximizer to help tighten up the tone too which was another $179? so for well under $500, more like mid to hi 300's, you have really as much tone shaping as you'll ever use for live gigging.

I've been happy with the Rane graphic and parametric eqs. I don't have any experience with it, but Peavey made a graphic called the Autograph IIRC. It used an LED display of "slider" positions with arrow keys to make adjustments. The nice feature of this system was storage of settings, so if you played the same room again you could just recall your previous settings.
I assume you are going to be recording with this>? Larrys right a good rane or similiar eq will work fine for live but i would not use this eq for recording. You could look into some of the focusrite platinum stuff. Thats a pre also but itd work as a great recording eq for bass. theres always a couple neve eq sections but i think thats gonna run over your $500 limit.

My dbx 231 should be in today or tomorrow. 
I can't wait. I'm getting mine for dual use. I can A/B between the two channels for different EQ curves, or when my band supplies the PA for shows, I'll use 1 side of the EQ and the other will be for the stage monitors.
If anyone is interested, I'm also about to try using a PreSonus TubePre for my preamp, and QSC RMX 1450 to power my bass cab(s) and stage monitors.
EQ is my best friend.
