Rack Mount tuner or snark?

Prob. a dumb question but:
Is a rack mount tuner really necessary, when I have a 18$ snark clipped onto my bass that tunes fine??
What are the benefits of an expensive (100+) rack mounted tuner over a snark??

I don't like having anything clipped to my bass, even temporarily. Having a rack tuner is convenient because I can leave my bass plugged into it all the time in a safe spot with the rest of my gear where I can easily see the display from a distance. All I have to worry with is the cable. You don't need a rack tuner for this but I find rack gear to be easier to work with for my needs.

If a small, cheap clip-on tuner works for you, there are no advantages of an expensive rack tuner. To each his own.

I've had a rack case with a GK 800RB and a compressor in it that I've been hauling around for almost 20 years. If my gigging schedule picks up, I'll be trading that for a Class D whatever-I-like-at-the-time. I'm done with rack anything. The snark is good. Unless my bass is adjusting to changes in humidity, I tune once, and I'm good for the set. The snark is fine for me.

If the Snark works for you then that's all you need.



I'd lose that sucker so I opted for the pedal.

All my basses have clip-on tuners. Way more convenient (for me) and way less expensive than a rack tuner.

For my gigging electric instruments, I've gone to pedal tuners. Since I power my onboard preamps externally via a TRS cable, I rewired my Donner tuners so power feeds into the ring connection of a TRS cable then into the instrument. Works on any instrument that uses the Ring connection in a TRS jack to complete the connection from the negative terminal of the battery to ground.

For pedal tuners, I like Donner, Snark, and Korg Pitchblack. (The Joyo tuner pedal I have isn't as good as the Donner or the Snark.)

For my stand alone instruments, I use headstock tuners, usually the micro Planet Waves tuners.

I stand too far away from a rack to use rack tuners. Rack tuners sound great for a studio but I don't do studio work.

Since this was posted in the recording gear section of the forum I'm assuming this is for studio use. Is it your studio or one owned by someone else? If it's owned by someone else, just use whatever they have on-hand. If they don't have anything on-hand, ask yourself why you're bothering to record at such an improperly equipped studio. If it's your studio, a rackmount can be very handy, but only if the person playing can easily see it from the position in the room where they're recording.
