Rack preamps really aren't that popular anymore....

I won't be getting rid of my Ampeg SVP-CL any time soon. I bought a Crown XLS-1000 to downsize from a Stewart World 2.1. I'm in the process of fabricating an all-aluminum case for the pair that will drop onto a SVT-210AV for rehearsals or use with the Acme B2 and B2W for larger rooms. I'm estimating the whole preamp/power amp/case will weigh in the low 20 lb. range. Not micro class but certainly light enough for my aging back to handle easily.

I know I'll probably get flamed like crazy, but my rig has performed admirably for quite a while now. I have a Behringer V-Amp Pro coupled with my Crown XLS1000 going into a Behringer BA410 cab, and at about 15 lbs in the rack, and right at 100 lbs on the cab, I have no complaints on power and volume, and I enjoy the flexibility I have with my tones. Are there better things out there, sure, but like others have said, with a good amp, I can change out the pre-amp later for something else if I need to, and retain my flexibility. Now that my rig is modular, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I know there are many who wouldn't wipe with a piece of Behringer equipment simply because of the name. To me if it's reliable, sounds good, and doesn't require a crew to move, then I'll play it. Take it for what it's worth, but I like it and the modular concept and it hasn't let me down.

Don't give up the search. it's a great preamp. Not many around with 4 tubes these days for a reasonable price.

I agree that they aren't that popular but I like them. This set up gives me exactly what I want tone wise that I couldn't find in a standard head and I have 1,000 watts to work with when I use 2 cabinets. I doubt I will ever change. I love the tone of the Bmax preamps. However the rack is a little heavy @ 48 lbs. A new Class-D power amp is must if I start playing out again.

I use a Hughes and Kettner BATT tube preamp. Run it usually into the back but occasionally through the preamp of my 236 watt TC RH 450. I tried the Alembic, Kern and Sarno rack pre's [ they are all amazingly good ] but the BATT sent them all on their way. Perfect rig for the small world music gigs I play.
