Rackmounting a head should there be an open space above it?

If you have to rack it you shouldn't need to leave a space above it. I've seen plenty of these racked-up being used outdoors all day long on festival stages. If it's really hot you sometimes see a standard clip-on/plug-in fan pointed at the back. If you're doing things right(not overloading, etc)it's pretty hard to cook an 800RB, IME anyhow.
 
How do i plug the 120v fan into the wall and would i have the fan blowing air into the rack case or blowing it out of the case? I've looked at premade ones that run for 60$ and theyre blowing the air out and should the fan be in the back or the front of the case?

You can't transfer cold in, but you can pull heat out. Always have the fan set up to move the hot air away from your head/rack.
 
I have my 2U Ashdown ABM500 in a 2U rack.

Lately I have noticed that the fan noise decreases as soon as I take the amp out of the rack. Bein in the rack adds a kind of whistling sound.

I'll try to put it in a 3 rack to see / hear if this produces less noise.
 
A clip on fan sounds alot easier and cheaper than making a rack case fan out of 120vac fans thanks for that haha.

Agreed, but it's just more stuff to carry separately and then set up. The idea of the rack is to minimize setup at the gig.

And if the clip-on falls off during the gig, you probably won't find out till something smokes.
 
I think one fan will do the trick for most racks. If you build a panel for it, hedge your bet: Mount one fan off-center, as if it's going to be a two-fan panel.

If you need to add a second fan, you can cut another hole for it, and you won't have to build a new panel.

The 120v fan I recommended earlier moves a whopping 120 cubic feet of air a minute, so it may be too noisy. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] moves much less: 17cfm, so it will be far quieter. Even this smaller airflow should work well for a rack, which is only a couple of cubic feet tops. Here's the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for the 80mm guard. The smaller 80mm size should fit in two rack spaces.

BTW, for best results, it's good to leave one open space on the front of the rack, to allow air to enter and flow through. One of these one-space vent panels will do nicely. Mount it on the front "diagonally opposite" the rear fan. (If the fan is at the top rear, put the vent panel at the bottom front.) This lets the air flow around all the equipment.

How much space would the other fan take up?
Oh and i was thinking of getting an 8 space rack here would be how i set it up

from bottom to top
Head
open space in front fan in back
open space in front fan in back
plywood going directly across for pedals

Regarding your rack setup, instead of plywood for your pedals, consider a rack shelf. It works like a sliding drawer and is much thinner & lighter than plywood. Also, the Furman is fine for all your outboard gear but I wouldn't recommend plugging your 800RB into it unless you're buying a version rated for 30 amps instead of the usual 15. Power conditioners are a bad idea for amplifiers in general but there are plenty of other threads here that discuss it in detail.

A simple surge protector is fine for an amp, but not something that regulates the voltage. Typically any "conditioner" under $200 is nothing more than a surge protector with some LEDs, lights, and outlets. But it isn't a voltage regulator, so it's fine.

Expensive units, like Furman's AR-1215, actually regulate the output voltage. These should not be used with amplifiers.

I'm telling you guys, unless the design of these amps have changed since the early 90's, it's not an easy amp to overheat. They get warm and could possibly overheat another piece of equipment mounted above it, that would be the only good reason to leave a space.

I just want to make sure. I'm going to be going on tours starting in like august so I just want to make sure i don't have to buy any sort of equipment on tour because i wont have the money. So I'd rather just be careful now than being sorry later

I can dig that! GK does make that rack mount kit, I doubt they would assume everybody would us a fan-cooled rack and there's nothing in the owners manual suggesting it. To be sure I would contact them directly just to be safe.
