Radial JDI speaker feature

Well maybe it's tube-snob bias, but I've not heard a lot of difference between just running a preamp from a SS amp into the PA and using the speaker out DI method. And I just looked up in the manual, and you are correct...that's exactly how they show using it for a speaker out DI. So I stand corrected on that, but you can do either or, although it does free up a 1/4" jack to go elsewhere if you do it the way they did it in the manual.

It isn't tube snob bias - the simple fact is there is more tubes in the signal chain before getting to the FOH!

I suppose I was looking at it this way - If I do a gig with my B3 or VTBD I am sending an amp sim to the FOH, and the Engineers I work with have been happy with what I am giving them. If I use a JDI in this fashion they are getting my amp, and the speaker sim from the JDI, which I would hope would be less stale that just getting the DI out of my Amp, or running the JDI before the Amp input.

It's just a theory...

So you don't believe there is any benefit running it in this config unless I'm using a tube amp? I was going to use it with my Sunn 1200s...

The manual specifically shows it with a lead from your speaker to the JDI. I find it odd, but that is how they show it.

no, there's no point; that 1200w ss power section is not contributing anything to the tone unless you're so loud you don't need to be in the PA anyway. just use the XLR or preamp out or effects send or whatever on the amp.

also, apparently there's a real danger with these boxes and class D ss power, where the ground reference is different and can send serious voltage up the XLR line and blow up the mixing board! tube amps only to be safe, and because there's no point otherwise.

finally, parallel is parallel, so it's the same whether the box is between the amp and the cab or jumped off a second speaker cable coming out of a cab. (just like daisy-chaining a cab off another cab is electrically identical to plugging them both into the head)

I wish the last time I did a gig where the House PA supplied a JDI I'd done this experiment. Hopefully the chance will come up again soon.

If only the 1200s was D class! It would drop 10kg of weight in a heart beat!

I've used JDI's for a long time, but I've never actually tested one out for a speaker level DI.

Probably like most people who've used a JDI a lot it never occurred to you to fix what wasn't broken?

I think I just found another reason to keep using old leadsleds and tube amps.
