Double Bass Radio Shack Lapel Mic Problem-New in the mail from Amazon-Didn't work at all!

Just bought the RS Lapel Mic(sent back!) from Amazon after reading results and raves on TB as a backup to keep in my UB bass case.
I do have other microphones & am happy with my Underwood PU.
Very excited to try as I opened the box, plugged it in (1/8" to 1/4 adapter....) but noticed that the battery was left in the 'ON' position, and there wasn't any sound!
Naturally, it's one of those round, flat watch-type batteries....
Realize that you usually get what you pay for ($28. from a vendor on Amazon).
Even called the 1(800) the shack phone number- foolish waste of time!
Anyone else experience issues, or is it worth trying again, this time from a store first?!
Thanks.

Thanks
I'm planning to experiment again with an AT mic that comes with a Fishmen Bass Blender.
Was using both-PU & mic with good sound quality.
Need to find a better configuration for attaching the jack to the bass (don't like the metal clamp on the strings below the bridge) & all of the spaghetti of cables.....

Must have been the battery!
How is the sound quality with your bass?
Did you mix PU & mic
How long does the battery last?
Thanks

Sound quality with mine is awesome. I've been using it for more than two years now and have had consistently good sound. Much better sound than with any of the previous pickups I've used. The battery that I'm using now has been in for at least 6 or 7 months. Of course, I only gig about 2 times a month, but it's left on for 3 -4 hours at a time. I don't use my RS mic with a pickup. Once I had the mic installed and had used it for a couple of months I sold my pickup and haven't missed it for a second.
