Randy Jo Hobbs live w Johnny

Randy was a huge influence on me when I first started playing. I used to go see him with Johnny and then Edgar a lot around NYC back in the day.

Who else combines bare bones 3pc Rock & Roll with such a funkiness like this? Double timing, chording, riffing. I can't help but notice he sets the tempo at the top. Not Johnny, not the drummer.

I was a huge Winter fan back in the 70's. ( My brother is a guitarist )
I alway dug Randy Jo's rock solid groove. Funky for sure. Check out Edgar Winters White Trash Album. Randy Jo kills on it too.

I think he's rolling from A maj to D maj? Open A then sliding the major 3rd and seventh as a chord on the D and G strings at the 11th and 12th frets respectively. Then open D against it's major 3rd way up the neck on the G string at the 11th fret(Gb). Then that cool footwork to finish out the measure in D. What a cool bass part!

Just watched this clip from Captured Live (by far the best version of this song I've heard) and it occurred to me that my favorite Johnny Winter material was with Randy Jo Hobbs on bass. I think his solid supportive groove and good musical sense helped Johnny to be at his best.

Here's another feel good rocker:
