Randy Meisners tone

I saw Randy way back in a band with the guy from Firefall. Killer band and Randy sang "take it to the limit" better than the recorded version. One thing to hear that song on a set of speakers. Something else entirely to have Randy sing it standing about 15 feet away from you on a low stage - close enough to count his fillings in his teeth. On that gig, he was playing a jazz bass that had no control knobs on it. And he had a great bass sound.

I also have flats on my P bass and get tone very similar to Randy's. SactoBass, Randy's health is not very good. Apparently, early last year, he chocked while eating and became unconscious. His wife rushed him the the hospital where he was related and revived. Not much news about him since. I work in health care and emergency medicine. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that he suffered an anoxic brain injury which most do not fully recover. If he indeed did go unconscious, he's lucky to still be alive. Man, I wish him the best. I hope he's O.K.

I think Meisner's work on the first Poco album tops anything he did with the Eagles or anything Timmy did with either band.

Yep. I think the first two Poco records are better than anything the eagles ever did as well.

Yes they were very good. Rusty Young and Richie Furay! They used tape speed manipulation in order to do execute some of those vocals, that's why the tunes aren't anywhere near true pitch. That's why the bass sounds so "rubbery". Pretty primitive!

The Eagles took that production concept.... to the limit..

Randy Meisner mostly used various Ampeg amps and a Fender Dual Showman amp on most of those Eagles albums. He famously played his Rickenbacker 4001, which was used on parts of Hotel California and One Of These Nights. But he also played a sunburst Fender Jazz Bass, a 76 Stingray Bass on the Hotel California tour and a Hagstrom 8 string bass.
