I've played one of these a lot (friend had one), and the pickup wasn't very good. I ended up building him a Fender Precision out of parts I had laying around. He's playing that to this day. So, for a Precision type bass, I'd give yours a 4 out of 10.
The coil that picks up the D & G strings appears to be sunken down in the left side of the pickup cover.
It may need a new spring.

My second bass was a black 5 string Sammick. It played fairly good, but I never did like the tone I got out of it. That was late 90s. My tastes then aren't what they are now. So maybe if I played it today Id have liked that tone. I was just a teenager playing grunge and hard rock stuff. So I didnt know what I didnt know. Now I'm late 30s and I guess I can still say the same. I remember I liked the neck on mine alot. The tone just sounded muddy to me.

Cool. I think I learned "Come Together" as one of my first Beatles songs. Mostly because that hook is just so tasty!
If you like McCartney (I do) you should pick up a Ric, Paul played a lot of their stuff with a Ric and the mute with flat wound strings. Listen to "Baby You're a Rich Man"
You do know he's a kid with a 50 buck bass, right? Let's not give him a complex out of the gate.
Personally, I liked Paul's Hofner work just fine.
