I've been listening to some Gentle Giant recently and boy, are those bass lines great!
I'm trying to learn The Advent of Panurge now; can't say it's going too well though

As the owner of every GG album on vinyl, both imports and domestic releases, I feel qualified to state that all the members of Giant were ridiculously talented, and that Ray Shulman was pretty inspirational to me as a bass player.

Still a fan today. Anyone heard Three Friends (Green, Minnear, Mortimore) yet?

Wow, one of my favorite bass players for sure and a huge influence on "Happy the Man".
Way underrated band and there is a great book on the band which chronicles the band and kind of analyzes why they were never accepted on a large scale - even though we all know that they should have been. I find it fascinating reading for the hard core fan.

Think a lot of the more "out there" basslines were actually Kerry Minnear's low keyboard parts doubled on up bass, eg Free Hand.

Totally agree with all other comments tho - woefully underrated bassist.

That day was one of the best of my life as i was able to finally see the Giant live in a tiny venue. They blew away the crowd!

Do you remember if he played a P-bass or the mystery bass? At another forum it was speculated it might be an early Ken Smith.

jacobacci was my first thought... the oversized lower horn and general largeness of the instrument would suggest that.

I'm pretty new here at Talk Bass, and this thread renewed my faith in the Universe.
I could never get enough of this amazing band.
When I analyze his bass playing I just chuckle.
By far Giant is a desert island choice.

Well, but Ray was one of the writers in the band, even on his own tunes he had pretty "out there" basslines, not just on Kerry's.
