In the early 2000s i received a beat up 1948 MIJ Fender PB551 Precision bass as a xmas present. Its that cool fender pewter color that aged to a strange gold/green. Also has a unique black painted neck. I believe it was listed around $150 dollars at the local music go around. I guess, at the time no one wanted these basses.
I'm primarily a guitar player, but i wanted to have a bass around. I was in high school and sold it to a buddy (for less than the original music go round purchase price) of mine in 2005 before heading of to college b/c i needed cash and less stuff. I always regretted selling it. In 2015 I started playing acoustic guitar shows in a duo with a buddy of mine. Occasionally one of us will pick up a bass, and the unique p bass would be perfect (I settled for a very nice playing Korean built alverez AEB200). I tried with no success to located my old friend and get the bass back.
Fast forward another few years to a couple months back. I renewed my efforts in getting ahold of my old buddy. I finally located him on facebook under a different last name. He IM'd me back after about a month and got me into contact with his parents, the bass was sitting their basement. He agree'd to sell it back to me at the same very low price i sold it to him for in 2005. I'd feel a bad about it if it wasn't now covered in spray paint and had an extra hole in the head stock.
I disassembled everything and after a few hours a of cleaning and an acetone bath (Remove spray paint) its back to early 2000s condition. I've never had a fret board soak up so much wood conditioner! It probably needs a few / all new frets and a couple pots... etc. Maybe i'll learn to do that, maybe not. I don't care, i'm thrilled to have it back.
