I still take out the trash , I swim and play golf and I pick up my instrument every day . Not to practice or to learn how to play something . But maybe throw on a jazz record and see how the saxophone solo might sound played on my bass.
Just to keep the connect and fluidity . Music is a part of me. That’s just who I Am.
Great player and one everyone should take away some of his playing and wisdom. There's a ton of cats out there with chops out the wazoo but the simple and solid guys always get the gigs!! I take great pride on being a simple and solid player. I also look up to guys like Will Lee and Nathan East.
A great doubler. I first knew of him as an upright player.
I love his approach to electric. More bass than guitar.
Rather than aspiring to shred on a 6 string electric like some other upright doublers, he takes his foundation over to the P bass or a 5 string.
I think of him as a major presence in the lineage of in-demand doublers that traces back to players like Bob Cranshaw.
The one time I saw Steely Dan live about 15 years ago, I had no idea who would be playing…turned out to be Ready Freddie Washington and Keith Carlock on drums! Was at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA - Freddie’s from Oakland - the next town over - so it was a hometown gig for him and the crowd loved him! Fantastic twist on familiar grooves, he is truly awesome!!
