Real World U-Bass

Awesome. That's going to be your main bass soon (or the 5 string Solidbody that you can build for under $500 from their site...):D

I will say that as an instrument it has my full respect. It is easy to play, and its tone is simply useful. I keep repeating myself, but once you get past its size, you see there is nothing gimmicky about this bass. It really does the job.

I will say my teacher would be all over me about my thumb position. My thumb is riding so high above the neck, I am pretty much only fretting with three fingers. That will catch up with me whenever we play something fast.

I would love it if Kahla made a 30" solid body U-bass with a 21 fret neck. Such a bass could be main player in a bunch of situations.
Goldtone makes a solidbody in at least 23" scale and quite possibly 25" also. I know the acoustic is available in either option.

Edit: I just checked Goldtones website. The solidbody is only 23" scale and its available in fretless and fretted. The acoustic is available with either scale length fretted or fretless. I had an acoustic fretted 23" scale. Nice instrument but I traded it for a Fender tbucket acoustic bass. I only like fretless in U bass size instruments.

I just know that 30" would be more comfortable me. My main fives are 35".

I hear you. I play mostly 34" 4 stringers only and dropping to the little 18" kala is quite a change! Going from the kala to the 23" Goldtone was a noticeable step up however. Too bad they have nowhere in your area to try one out. I think some guys have converted standard electric guitars over to ubass type instruments too. They gut the thing and put in piezo bridge and different tuners and stuff and make a fretless longer scale ubass! Another option you may be able to consider is cigar box guiitars. They make basses also, but usually 34" scale or 1 or 2 string, but I have seen one that was uke size with Kala Paehoehoe strings on it! Maybe you could get one of the cigar box makers to help you out with a 30" scale rubber string instrument!

Nice, you get any feedback problems?

I played one the other day at a festival as I was recovering from shoulder surgery. In front of an SVT classic and 810. Crazy feedback if I moved too much. It did come handy at the end of the set when we usually get really loud on the last note. I got some stuttering feedback going with the tuner button.

Kala has a feedback freezer that fits the acoustic ubass. But I've found you still have to be careful like any acoustic. My Jack Casady bass will howl like a banshee if I'm not careful also.
