Double Bass Realist + Radial Tonebone

Just trying to :help: folks avoid some confusion. :D
There are 13 Tonebone pedals. Several people are referring to a Tonebone when they presumably mean a Bassbone. For the sake of clarity, please differentiate between the Tonebone pedals.

I use a PZed-Pre w/ Underwood on a carved bass and it's great for my needs.

im not sure which you're referring to here, althouth the PZ pre literature does indeed say unity gain, but that has to be a misprint. the PZ pre is indeed a preamp. it provides a ton of gain, almost too much sometimes. i can easily overdrive the input of my amp if i crank this thing, and that doesnt happen with the pickup alone. also, the input impeadances are 10 meg ohm, which is exactly what you want for a piezo pickup. the EQ section is boost/cut, so i think that makes it a preamp, doesnt it?
you dont need another box with this one.

i use a Realist and i bought a Radial Tonebone from Bob Gollihur earlier this year, and i like the Tonebone for what it is.

it is not a preamp. it provides unity gain as Bob has stated. it is a great tool for getting a boost and a separate EQ for soloing, but if you need a preamp you would need to get that additionally.

by the way, the PZ pre is a fantastic unit. ive used many preamps, and the pz pre is the one i bring to every gig. i even have the Headway that everyone is talking about, and i think the PZ pre blows it away in the sound dept. its not even close.

(previously owned preamps that the PZ pre beats are: fishman BII, fishman pro platinum bass, Raven labs, D tar solstice, Headway, sans amp para driver- this one is good but noisy and no high pass filter, and the Avalon U5- sounds good but very big and not enough versatility to use as a stand alone preamp in my opinion, but it does warm up the sound nicely when used with one of the above.)
