REALLY STRANGE RICKENBACKER

Definitely gonna try it out before going through with the trade. Think it would be worth the trade, if it played well?
It could be, that's going to be your judgment call at that point! As stated try to insist on a peek under both plates!
Please let us know what you wind up doing!
Good Luck!
(maybe try to find some stripped down Rick body photos so you're prepared)

Sorry for my ignorance, but I’m not familiar with cases. Is it supposed to be good?
From what I can see (which is admittedly not much) it is a Silver G&G Case.
But unlike the current offering, it has a 'center pick box' like the Fender Custom Shop cases have. Oh! And a fitted body compartment.
Get that case!!
*edit* Sorry, but I'm an admitted "Case Freak." I like nice cases for my nice basses.

There are two main threads of interest here:
  • Is this bass a genuine Rickenbacker?
  • Is this bass a good quality instrument, regardless of provenance?
If you're the type who buys with an eye towards resale value, then the first is more important. Me, I don't care about resale or provenance, so I'm firmly in the second camp. If it plays well and sounds good, it's worth consideration!

From the tiny glimpse of the case, it is very similar to the Rickenbacker reissue case that came with a 2000 4001 V63 I owned.

It probably shouldn't have a Rickenbacker TRC on it.
That's not a real RIC TRC.

My biggest issue is the number of frets........ one extra fret ...Im not sure about 4004/Laredos ..….a quick Google pic search of 4004 or Laredo nets me both: some with extra frets, some without...…
Can you post some pics? I don't recall ever seeing a factory 4004 with 21 frets.

disregard my post - .....im so used to seeing that on 4001 copies, the missing fret dot on some 4004 models was throwing me off...…..

that OP model is so peculiar......I never seen an instrument that looked so much right and wrong at the same time

I was thinking it could be a reworked re-issue 80's 4001S, which would explain the lack of rear cover.
But it has more frets! So it can't be this.
See attached photos.
