REALLY STRANGE RICKENBACKER

That’s a new Laredo with some mods to look like a bass JPJones played once. Probably made by Sterling.

I haven’t got my hands on it yet!! I just wanna try to make sure it’s legit before I trade my gear
The one the OP posted pics of and the one on Reverb are two very different basses, and only one of them is a legit Rick that's been modded, the other is a fake. You decide which is which. ;)

BTW, the one on Reverb was originally a Cheyenne (body, anyway), going by the control cavity photo.

I’d say : get a pic of the pots and routing. The cavity for the neck pickup wising is routed in a peculiar fashion (if original). Also , check the pots - nobody would go through the hassle of getting “period correct” pots for a fake that’s getting traded , however , a real a real “factory one-off” would have used factory pots and routing.

For me , the fretboard alone is an easy way to spot a real ric. I’d say this thing you have here is real, just going by the fretboard.

Dunno, man. I don't know squat about Ricks beyond vague generalities.

My first reaction seeing the OP Rick was "wow! that's a really great fake!" As I read the thread, the first few posts had me doubting myself, but the OP Rick still feels wrong in the pics, and I don't know why.

I believe the OP Rick is a non-factory Partenbacker. I have no facts on which to base this belief, other than a gut feeling.

That looks like a real Ric, but heavily modded. The Chinese never seem to nail the fingerboard, they always use some cheap "Brown wood" that may or may not be rosewood. That one looks like bubinga or one of the newer board woods. The 4005 style pickguard reminds me of some Dane Wilder one-offs, maybe one of his?

Real or not I like it. I own the one that shaggy reposted. Mine is a build supposedly by an ex employee from Rick but I can’t confirm it. I feel that it plays nice and is a cool build either way because you never see them out there. It is based off of the 4001s Experimental. I also wanted to know peoples thoughts?

I think that JetGlo Rick is a 4004 with some mods. I've done the same mods on a few 4004's ...

I found the discussion in the Rickenbacker club. It was on 26 May 2019. Dane (@Aceonbass ) appears to disavow himself of said bass. And the sterling bass is now owned by @Peer75RI and is probably with him in Belgium.

Could we see a pic of the output jack plate?

Does it play nicely and sound good? I'd consider is a homebrew (especially in light of the no-serial-number situation.) It probably shouldn't have a Rickenbacker TRC on it. This is the kind of confussion that copy-righting is supposed to alleviate.
