Reaper, Reason 7 vs. Reason Essentials for bass recording

A guitar-playing/tech friend wants to do some interstate recording. I have Reaper but he wants to use Reason because it has more guitar features. Fair enough. Incidentally, he also has Pro-tools but he thinks that Reason is better or at least more user-friendly.

Reaper suits me just fine. Any chance of his using Reason and my using Reaper and combining tracks and mixing?

Will Reason Essentials for $99 be enough for my end? I really can't seen spending another $400 on Reason 7 which looks like way more stuff than needed for recording bass.

Reason Essentials should be fine, but why don't you try this:
Have him send the tracks he wants you to record on as wav or aiff files as a rough stereo 2 track mix with a couple of bars of clicks to count in. You should be able to send him wav or aiff files (depending on your system) of your tracks that he can then load into Reason and mix. You can use Dropbox, Hightail, or any number of FTP hosting sites available online for little or no cost.
I am extremely comfortable with Sonar, but most of my clients use Pro Tools. I've found this to be a good work around.

Worked for me as well when we did our album, I tracked and comped my parts in Reaper to click track, sent our guitarist the rendered wav files of just the DI bass and he mixed it all in Pro Tools.
