Reason 3.0

OK, I know that this isn't technically recording, but it is sequencing and midi etc.

I have Reason 3.0, but I have heard whole songs that people have written and recorded on it, and I have no idea how to do that kind of stuff.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any free tutorials that could teach me how to do that kind of stuff (recording stuff on Reason, writing parts without using a matrix sequencer etc.)

I don't need really basic stuff like how to create a mixer or route effects, but stuff like auto volume control etc.

I don't have a midi keyboard or controller if that makes a difference, just a keyboard and a mouse.

I'm not an expert but I think you will harness Reason more effectively with a controller of some type. Look into geting a keyboard like an Ozone, where you can assign software functions to the knobs and sliders. If you have to do everything by mouse and keypad, it will be painfully slow, I think, and you will miss out on some functions. Also, think about getting a keyboard just for the musical capabilities. And the Ozone has 1/4 inch inputs for your guitar and bass playing.

Do a Google search on Reason, there are more than a few links for users, including forums like this and tutorials too... but you could also be asking questions on the official Propellorheads forum (unless you have a cracked version, in which case forget it).

There are a few tutorial books and DVDs available as well, so do a search at whatever big online bookstore you like.

I think you should also invest in a MIDI controller. I am looking for one at the moment, they really aren't that expensive

Look for a midi keyboard/controller with a usb-midi out so you can avoid needing a converter. I really like the M-Audio Axiom.

MF often has clearances on midi controllers and even a inexpensive one will provide a decent solution.

It will be worth the investment.

i agree you really need to pick up a midi controller to get into reason, it makes life a whole lot easier and don't bother with one that has an audio interface built in since reason can't take audio input unless you have it rewired to another sequencer. but there are a couple books with tutorials on reason, just go to your local barnes and noble or whatever, check them out an pick up the one that best suits you, i also think reason has some tutorials on their site with videos, i might be wrong though.
