Reasonably priced indie bass...

It is crazy to want a bass dependant on the image and the sound.

Indie bass is always pretty formulaic anyway, you could get that tone from any bass. Just go to your local pawnshop and by the craziest looking bass on there. Indie is all about worn out instruments not shiney new ones. You might have a couple of Neil Young albums floating around on your Ipod, and he plays banged up old guitars. If you dont have any Neil Young then get some! You are in peril of becoming the laughing stock of all your indie friends who atleast pretend to listen to him!

I bet Neil's guitars (whatever they may be) are set up to play flawlessly for his style. Even if he says otherwise. He's old enough to have figured out that there's no extra cool points for using a tool that doesn't work as well as it ought to. He's got enough cool points anyhow.

I do care about how it sounds, that's why im not buying some random bass just because it looks cool. But i would like to have an instrument that i personally like to look at. That's why im looking at other options, there's nothing wrong with my B-50, but it's just black, and it's getting old. I suppose i could just paint it, but im also looking at options for down the road.

If you want an instrument that you like to look at, select from those that seem "indie" to you and give you the sound and playability you want.

All the super indie bands that nobody has heard about play Fender Mustangs. Better get on that train before people hear about it and you need to find the next cool way to be uncool.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a jackass. I hate the genre descriptor "indie" and the majority of the stereotyped hipster kids that subscribe to that label. Wait, I forgot, they don't subscribe to any labels. They just ride fixies and listen to music until someone else has heard about it...

I know the specific fixie type. They match their hubs and chains and rims and then try to act like it "just kinda happened". Pretty bikes, tho, some of 'em. I don't see it as being any different than the roadie with thousands of dollars worth of bike that he had to pay for himself because he's not fast enough to get anyone else to do it.

On topic- Mustangs came to mind here, too.

I'm sure you don't actually hate the kids. As for achieving a look... This is weird. Looks get passed down by the famous player who, by virtue of his ability to influence so many (his fame), isn't as indie as he used to be. He's now just another rock star who plays something his fans are afraid to call rock. So much effort goes into perfecting the casual facade that it hardly seems worthwhile. Easier to just go run for SGA.

I do get the indie clothing thing in that 90% of my wardrobe is khakis, T-shirts and sweatshirts and I use the dryer to do my ironing for me as often as I can.

You are SOOOO right! I never thought about that....
Ric's I think are used by EVERY indie band nowadays!

Now thaaats why they are so pricey and overrated!

I just switched over to bass and picked up a '85 Peavey Patriot. Peavey is US made, underappreciated, solid bass with great sound. Since they are not the "Name" brand everyone recognizes, they don't get there just due. Talk about PUNK. They can be had for a good buck, and are well worth the money. You get all ya need. Offbeat great sounding bass that not many rock out cause of the label on the neck, that will handle the riggers of giggin. I did just get a VM Jaguar. Which is the best of both worlds. P and J with a twist of some knobs. The bridge needs to be changed out (cheap), but sounds great. Good luck
