Reasons not to mod a Squier Bronco

Mustang, Bronco...a horse is a horse.

I could be mistaken about the tuners. They are Fender/Squier though, got 'em off ebay after checking the bushing diameter.

Maybe they're older ones. Either way, it looks great! I ordered the Gotoh-style tuners for mine.

Thanks. It will get a tuner upgrade if I ever get in a band and use it, which I would. I went with those because they were cheap, easy to install, and have the clovers.

I don't like the clovers myself. They look too Fendery for me.

Here's my Bronco with a few mods.

You did what I really want to try.....a neck pickup. What do you have up there? Also where did you get the horse decal on the headstock? I was thinking Uffington Horse but I like yours.

Just modified my Bronco...

This is what you get when you cross a Stingray preamp with a Strat Surf Guitar Lipstick Humbucker located in a P bass sweet spot and connected to a parallel/series/single coil switch on a short scale Bronco bass with a Hipshot bridge, tapewound strings and a P bass ashtray.

It plays very nice with thunderous lows and shimmering highs in typical stingray fashion but the strat Humbucker pickup adds an interesting bit of twang to the mix. The coil switching is handy and makes a pretty significant difference in the aggressiveness, attack and to a lesser degree the volume. Here's a close up of the trim ring mounted coil switch...

All in all I'm really pleased with how it looks and sounds. However this was only a proof of concept to see if all the parts would work well with each other and make a sound worth keeping. Since they do, I'll go on to the next step which will be a maple or walnut Bronco shape pickguard and body routing to move the control knobs where I want them. I'll probably reshape the headstock as well and remove the Squier and Bronco stickers since its not really much of a bronco anymore.

I think modding a bass can or can't be a very good or bad idea, depending on what bass it is, and what mod it is. If the bass needs the mod, then it is, indeed a very good idea, and if the bass doesn't need the mod, then it might be a very bad idea, however, it still could be a good idea, and you'll never know unless you do it.

All results will be less than scientific, using this formula.

OK, here's the configuration I will STAY with....

I got a TV Jones-design pickup out of a Gretsch 2202 and installed it. WOW!! That is one of my all-time favorite pickups, and it just roars in the Squier.

Here's how I have it set up...next to my Mikey Way Squier, which has a humbucker in it:

If you can't rock it with one of these two basses, it prob'ly doesn't need to be rocked.

Just a bit. I used a Dremel tool to remove perhaps 1/2" of wood on the E string side. Needed a bit more room due to the rectangular pickup. IIRC I also had just a touch of wood to remove for the top right corner of the pickup. The pickguard covered both mods.

Routing would have been overkill for the small amount of wood that needed to be removed.
