Reccomend Me an Acoustic

Dean makes a pretty good acoustic bass, great quality at a fair price. I picked up the Exotica model for about $400 new. I know they make some cheaper models.

No need for an amp if you are just sitting on the street corner during the veggie market. If you’re going to do an out door pavilion in front of a few hundred people then your going to need an amp.

Yeah, that's expected. It's really gonna just be us 4 messin around and if people come to see, then they come to see.

Well my issue with the amp is why would I even get an acoustic if I was gonna use an amp anyways? If I get an amp i'll just use my bass.

As Philbiker said above, for the sound. I find all kinds of great uses for it when recording. Also good for just grabbing around the house for practice. I hear that a Hognose 30 battery powered amp is just the ticket to go with one. I intend on getting one someday.

I have an Epiphone acoustic El Capitan 4 string ABG, I play clubs with a Banjo player and sometime I do Street gigs and Coffee Houses with bluegrass/celtic group. You will surely need and amp. I just bought a Crate Limo 50 watt battery powered amp. It goes for at least 8 hours on one charge. It's more of a portable pa system. It really works great, I highly recomend this for your ABG and its very small and weight about 20lbs

Your first post did say acoustic/electric...

Anyway. I went shopping for something in this range a few months ago. I ended up with a semi hollow electric bass which is loud enough to play alone but not with anyone.

I was looking at acoustic basses though. A few things to consider.

weight:An acoustic body is alot lighter.
volume: I think an acoustic body bass could be heard fine if the guiaters and drums aren't overpowering, have you heard how these guys are going to play acoustic?
An acoustic is much louder unplugged than a semi-hollow
size:This was the determining factor for me, my semi-hollow is the same thickness as a solid body, less than 2 inches.
The acoustic ones are 5+ inches thick, uncomfortable to me.

I did see a nice Tacoma but didn't play it, they can be pricey and it was $500 on sale.
I did however play an Ibanez that retails for around $400. It looked nice and sounded pretty good. Also nice and easy to play, but no preamp adjustments.

I picked up an El Capitan fretless 5 this week. I haven't gigged with it yet but I imagine it's nowhere near loud enough to perform acoustically. The only time I'd play the ABG without an amp would be in a small jam session, and even that's debatable.

I forgot to mention, I have owned my Epi El Capitan ABG for about 10 years and never plug it in 2 an amplifier, my first experience was a nightmare. I had to change to direct input on stage when the clubs sound system had mic problems. My low E String was overpowering and each succeeding string was softer until the G string had hardly any volume at all. I play with my fingers and not with a pick and I could still not correct the volume levels. You can imagine how funny a bass groove being played across the strings sounds like this. From my understanding this is a common problem with bridge type pickups. I have just ordered a set of Bob Gollihur pickups that are promised to make a 300% difference in sound quality and balance the string volume.

I have not received as yet but I will let keep you posted.

if you're looking for the best volume and sound (IMO), you'll want to go this route:

if you want a ABG with decent volume, you'll want a tacoma (or the olympia, which is the cheaper version of the tacoma thundercheif)

+1000!!!!!!! olympias are loud and great I own one, but..... uprights are WAYYY LOUDER!!!

Schwaaa: if I were you I would forever regret not buying a Tacoma for $500. I am still kicking myself 6 years later for not buying an Olympia for $400. I would do just about anything for a Thunderchief, but they are hard to find an EXPENSIVE since Fender put the company out of business.
